Drafting Notes
37.1 The section is to be amended to keep its meaning consistent with that of the current section. Presently the section requires resignations by members of the House of Representatives to be given in writing to the Speaker. Since by virtue of proposed s.58A(i) the Governor-General will replace the Speaker as the presiding officer in the House, the amendment requires resignations to be given to the Governor-General. Note that proposed s.60B(2)(i) provides for what may be done in the absence of the Governor-General or Deputy, so resignations will still be possible notwithstanding absences. The change is consistent with those to be made to ss.19 and 21.
